News Media invited to Rookie Sportsperson training, Teller County, Aug 15
DIVIDE, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife invites members of the news media Saturday, Aug. 15, to see and interview participants and officers leading the 2026 Rookie Sportsperson Program as they develop their outdoor skills during a hands-on event in Teller County.
Participants will spend the day receiving training and gaining experience shooting bows, rifles and shotguns under instruction from CPW wildlife officers. News media will have opportunities to capture photos and video of the event and interview participants, wildlife officers and program partners about the year-long journey from novice sportsperson to knowledgeable, responsible hunter.
Bang-and-Twang comes at an important point in that journey. Since beginning the program in March with a Hunter Education course taught by CPW wildlife officers, the 2026 class has participated in Turkey 101 and spring turkey hunts, a fishing and camping event, .22-caliber and large-bore range training and, most recently, Elk/Deer/Pronghorn Hunting 101 ahead of their fall big game hunt.
Participants are matched with CPW wildlife officers who mentor them throughout the year, helping them build on those lessons and gain practical experience. Following Bang-and-Twang, the program moves into its fall hunting activities, including a dove hunt, wing shooting, small-game instruction and rifle qualifications in September, followed by instruction in processing harvested game and a deer and pronghorn camp and hunt in October.
The program continues into 2027 with additional activities including Ice Fishing 101 and instruction on Colorado’s big-game application process.
Launched in 2015, RSP provides novice sportspersons a year of hands-on training and mentorship designed to build on the foundation provided by Hunter Education. Participants develop practical outdoor skills while learning hunting ethics, wildlife conservation and what it means to become an active steward of Colorado’s wildlife.
Saturday’s event also recognizes Safari Club International Colorado Chapter for grant support of the Rookie Sportsperson Program.
