Turkey, Hungary ink agreements on security, technology, culture
During a joint appearance in Istanbul after official discussions, Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan remarked that the two governments are close to achieving their goal of a $6 billion trade volume. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban was in Türkiye for the seventh gathering of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, a platform aimed at advancing collaborative efforts.
Erdogan noted that the delegations also explored setting a more ambitious commercial milestone, saying they examined possibilities to raise the target to $10 billion. He highlighted that "We implemented 28 joint actions, allocated resources to joint projects" as part of the initiatives tied to the 2025 Türkiye-Hungary Year of Science and Innovation.
In addition, the two sides agreed to form a joint planning entity led by their foreign ministries.
This mechanism is intended to ensure that bilateral and global matters are addressed with greater structure and coordination.
Erdogan explained that shifting security dynamics across Europe have prompted both governments to explore new avenues in defense cooperation. He stated that "we are evaluating projects — including those that foresee joint production — which will further advance our defense industry cooperation.”
The leaders also reviewed ongoing international challenges, with attention to developments in the Middle East and the conflict in Ukraine. Erdogan acknowledged Hungary’s engagement in the Organization of Turkic States as an observer, praising its constructive stance within the group. He said, "We are confident that Hungary will continue its constructive contributions and strong support in our strategic goal of full European Union membership."
Addressing the war between Russia and Ukraine, Erdogan emphasized that Ankara has consistently sought a fair and enduring resolution by using every diplomatic channel available.
He repeated his nation’s guiding principle that "there are no winners in war and no losers in a just peace."
Expressing optimism for the future of bilateral ties, he stated his belief that the latest council meeting "will contribute to further strengthening our relations and the deep-rooted bonds of friendship between our peoples."
After the high-level talks, both governments endorsed 16 new agreements spanning multiple sectors. The day concluded with Erdogan hosting a formal dinner for Orban in Istanbul.
